A safer seven-step workflow to improve video resolution

1. Recover the closest thing to the camera original

Every upload, message attachment and editor export can introduce a new compression pass. Start with the earliest available file. If you only have a platform copy, keep it—but set expectations based on the damage already baked into it.

2. Define the destination before the output size

Decide whether the result is for a vertical social post, a 1080p web player, a 4K timeline, a product page or an archive. Match the aspect ratio to that destination rather than stretching the image. A wider frame is not automatically a better frame.

3. Work on a representative test segment

Choose 5–10 seconds that include faces, fine textures, motion, text and a dark area. Process the test before committing an entire video. This exposes waxy skin, ringing around text and frame-to-frame shimmer much faster than inspecting a single still.

4. Reduce the artifact that hides real detail

Use only enough denoising or compression cleanup to stabilize the image. Strong denoising can erase hair, fabric and skin texture. If the source is already clean, skip this step; every filter is another opportunity to remove useful information.

5. Upscale while preserving aspect ratio

Traditional scalers estimate new pixels from neighboring pixels. AI or super-resolution methods can use learned patterns, and video models may also use adjacent frames. Both approaches can create a larger image; neither can guarantee the exact detail that was never captured.

6. Restore edges after the image is stable

Sharpening increases contrast around edges. Adobe's documentation warns that too much sharpening or a very low threshold can amplify noise and produce unexpected results. Judge the effect at 100% and watch moving edges, subtitles and faces—not only a paused landscape.

7. Compare motion, not just screenshots

Play the before and after versions at the same size. Look for temporal flicker, crawling texture, halos and detail that changes shape from one frame to the next. If the enhanced version calls attention to the processing, reduce the settings.

Export for the platform that will re-encode the video

Preserve the source frame rate unless you are deliberately performing frame-rate conversion. YouTube's current official guidance says to upload at the same frame rate used for recording and recommends MP4, progressive video and H.264 as a common delivery combination. Other destinations have their own requirements, so check the target before final export.

Keep a high-quality master as well as the delivery copy. A service may re-encode the upload, and you will want the master if you need a new crop, bitrate or format later.
