Video compression artifacts explained: blocks, bands, ringing and smearing

Recognize common encoding damage so you can choose a better source, export or cleanup step.

Compression artifacts are visible errors introduced when an encoder simplifies a video to fit its data budget. Common examples include square blocks, color banding, ringing near sharp edges, mosquito noise around text and smeared detail during motion. The best fix is usually a cleaner source or higher-quality export; filters can reduce symptoms but cannot fully restore discarded information.

Blocking and mosquito noise

Blocking appears as square regions, especially in dark gradients or fast motion. Mosquito noise looks like crawling speckles around hard edges, captions and logos. Both become more obvious when a small, compressed file is enlarged.

Banding and lost gradients

Banding turns a smooth sky, wall or shadow into visible steps. Limited bit depth, aggressive compression and repeated grading can all contribute. Adding contrast after the damage often makes the steps more obvious.

Ringing, halos and oversharpened edges

Ringing forms echoes near strong edges. It can come from compression, scaling or sharpening. If every branch, subtitle and product edge has a light or dark outline, reduce sharpening and find an earlier-generation source.

Respond in order of recoverability

First replace the source if possible. Next create a less compressed export. Then test gentle artifact-specific cleanup on a short clip. Upscale only after the pattern is as stable as it can be, and stop when additional filtering erases more subject detail than it saves.

Some restoration models can reduce their appearance, but ordinary resizing may enlarge them and no method can guarantee recovery of discarded detail.

Why do dark scenes break into blocks?
